"Gather Ye Rosebuds While Ye May" is a poem by Robert Herrick. This poem portrays our existence on earth, and that people age as life goes on, and everything becomes boundless. Herrick here urges people to take advantage of youth and energy while they may! The poem is in the genre of carpe diem, to seize the day.

Memoirs of a Khunfisana - Episode 4

Any resemblance to existing persons in our story is purely coincidental.

-Memoirs of a Kunfisana series won't be back till July because June's posts will be something new!-

Submitted by Suli

Zlaikhah rested her head sorrowfully on Mmimmi's lap, "I'm not significant, am i?", she asked.....

Mmimmi was curling Zlaikhah's antennae with her finger, "of course you're significant," she said, "but you have to forget all about Isaak, and realize that fluffy is nothing more than a louse, and you know what they say about lice..", she added.

"yeah... I know what they say about lice...and its true, i think...'a louse is only after one thing', my dear mother used to tell me."

Mmimmi lifted Zlaikhah head and placed it between her hands, "you must realize that the world is a huge place," she said, in her usual confident

I-don't-care-if-they-think-I'm-non-existing way, "you must hitch a ride on the nearest sheep and go on a journey...a journey of self discovery"

Zlaikhah's eyes widened, "YES!", she exclaimed, "that is what I'll do. i have sheep friend, shag-ha, and she has always talked about jumping the fence and seeking down greener pastures. I'll ask her once she is don with her perm"

2. Mention the rules on your blog.

3. Tell about 6 unspectacular quirks of yours.

Quirks:

1- Having all my stationary labeled at work... that includes pencils and pens!

2- When I set the volume on TV, the number has to be in multiples of five! (5, 10, 15, 20, 25, 30, .....)

3- My clothes are arranged by type first; tops go together - pants together - skirts together....etc. Then I separate clothes by events.... work clothes, occasion clothes (receptions, weddings, casual), then by color, so when opening my closet...for exapmple, you find the whites hanged together, blacks together, reds, blues, and it goes on and on and on! This is because; (1) is easy on the eyes, and (2) saves me A LOT of time

4- Things in my bathroom are arrange in a certain way... I have all my products (shampoos, shower gels, bubble baths, scrubs...etc) facing the same way!

5- Sometimes.... and I am saying SOMETIMES.... I have a pulsating vein that POP OUT on my forehead when I am angry!

6- I also think I have OCD... I blogged about it before (click here)

Today -the day after my cousin's wedding- was so much fun :-) I spent it with some family members who came down to Kuwait for the wedding. We were waiting outside their hotel waiting for them when we realized that our car -according to the navigator- is standing on the sea!!! (Check the pic above!) LOL

We drove down Gulf Road and snapped some pics of Kuwait Towers -I snapped a couple my self (again check the pic above)

First we headed to Sharq area and shopped in Arraya Center and Dar Al Awadi, then headed to The Avenues. I had so much fun, I hope our guests enjoyed it as much as we did hehehehe.

Today is the last post for May -if I dont post later in the day- and I have a new theme for June posts ;-)

Blanking!

R.G. asked me to post.. but I dont have anything to talk about today, so I will talk about random things in points (following Yara's style)

* Time Goes By So Slowly! I think that songs fits well for my mood at the moment! I am so bored and even the things I am doing or working on are making me sleepy! 25 more minutes!

* Another barista encounter happened today (I am thinking to add "Barista" as a label now since I have so many stories about that dude)

Me: Can I have a Steak Panini?
Barista: Make it hot?
Me: Yes, but whats in it?
Barista: BEEF!!! (he wanted to get back at me, I swear LOL)
S.S.(my co-worker): DUHHHHH! She meant whats in it beside the BEEF! (he was laughing)

Barista get the papers with the sandwiches' descriptions and at this point it was showing that he was feeling uneasy!

Barista: BEEF, capsicum, tomato, cheese, mushroom...
Me: I want you please to remove the capsicum and tomatoes!
Barista: I dont know if its possible, its already mixed!
Me: Mixed? Blended together???
Another Barista: No no... I will remove them for you ma'am!
Me: Thanks (I so want to :-P at THE Barista)

* I have a lot on my mind.. that includes errands to run this afternoon after work, then meeting up a friend for coffee, then I have to do something with family.... and even by then I wont be done, so I am taking the day off tomorrow! Its also my cousin's wedding tomorrow :-D (YAAAAAY so happy! I am actually looking forward for it)

* I hope R.G. is reading my nonsense!

Cheers!

Méli Mélo - More Pictures

Méli Mélo

Yesterday was eventful day! I left work around 4:00ish and was back home watching some TV…. We had some plans made for the night that I was waiting for since last week. We were privileged to get invited by Mr. Adel Behbehani to try this new Japanese & Gourmet Food Boutique “Méli Mélo*”. Basically we were asked to go try their Sushi/Japanese food, rate it, and give out comments.

We, a group of seven, went in at around 8:00PM…. The boutique setting looked like a chocolate store, there were a couple of bonsai trees, a very nice chandelier, a kitchen, some shelves with lots of Japanese food and cooking products, and very friendly staff members! A table was set just for us with some evaluation papers to full about Japanese food and restaurants in Kuwait, and another to rate the food items we were about to try! I was very thrilled!

We started off with a Japanese Green Salad. What can I say! I LOVED IT! It was a mix of greens, carrots, cucumbers, cashew nuts, and an apple sauce… the salad was gone in a matter of minutes, it was almost perfect, I just wished that the apple sauce was a bit thicker! A few minutes later, they brought spicy edamame, which I can’t really rate because I am not a big fan of spicy food and would rather have the plain one with sea salt… nevertheless, the plate was emptied as well. As I said, when you are in a group of seven people your taste buds get tickled in different ways! Then fried breaded shrimps were served. Let me just say that they did not feel oily at all… They were given out with sweet chili sauce and were so light and yummy! Negimayaki was next! I absolutely loved it and had two pieces instead since one of us in the group does not eat red meat so I jumped in! The meat was juicy and the taste of spring onions was not too strong to ruin it for me. After a bit came the calamari with two kinds of sauces; lemon based and sweet & spicy. I thought the lemon complimented the taste of the calamari really well, but the sweet & spicy gave it a twist! I cant even decide which sauce I liked better with the calamari, so I kept alternating till I said, “OK… THE LEMON!”.

The night kept getting better and better, and we were having so much fun snapping away pictures and discussing what we liked best… so should I continue about other food items we tried? I think you wanna know!

Sesame Beef came, and as I said… non-red meat-lovers gave us the opportunity to have more and more hehehe, I am not a big fan of sesame, so I tried to dig in for the plain ones, but even with sesame… no problemo for me! I kept going at it! Yes, it was that good. First kind of Maki arrived, its called Arabian Maki! Arabian? Yes, because it contained dates! Talk about creativity huh!? Not a big fan of dates, but turned out that I am a HUGE fan of that maki. The taste was just something different! Then the waiter brought what looked like a breaded maki rolls! No! It wasn’t maki rolls, it was chicken wrapped in cabbage rolls. Again, not a big fan of cabbage, but I was not trying to waste any minute here and missing out on any items served… I tried it, it was not bad. OK, so almost every Japanese restaurant here in Kuwait have their own version of the “Crazy” maki, right? Méli Mélo’s crazy maki was awesome! I don’t usually order crazy maki, but since our menu was set… I did not mind it at all of course, and actually loved it so much that I gave it two thumbs up!

Getting full... are we? I don’t think that would stop us from what was coming next! Chicken in Plum Sauce was next, followed by fried gindara fish. The chicken was okay, and the fish was not bad at all. As I said, our views varied very much at some given points. The waiter then decided to let us try their California Maki. I don’t usually go for it, because I think it is a waste of time hehehe, but it was really good. Kani Maki was next, and it was outta this world! Its what they call it their house special! I would so recommend this to any crab lover! What came next was also yummy! It was Cranberry Maki with Smoked Salmon! It’s a surprise with every bite, very interesting combination and very yummy too! One minute you are chewing salmon, the other is cranberry!

We were then asked to try their mixed fried rice and mixed noodles… both were good, but not something I would order. I would go straight for sushi and salads and heart meaty stuff LOL! The last two items we were asked to try were Volcano Rock, which I loved so much… specially the crispy noodles on top of it, and Chicken Dumplings… Not a big fan of dumpling so I am not the judge here!

Overall… it was a very fun experience… very interesting. The food was awesome, I would strongly recommend the restaurant for you to try once its open for the public (which is around a month from now). But that doesn’t mean you cant stop by and try their cooking products… such as Japanese pickles, teas, rice, noodles, vinegar, sauces….etc.

The store is located in Al Shaab Al Bahry on Al Kendi Street (Behind Flex Fitness Club and not too far from LOfat). They are open Saturday – Thursday from 10:00AM to 1:00PM and in the afternoons from 5:00PM to 9:00PM. Tel: 266-1520/1.
Give it a shot! Its worth it!

*Méli Mélo, pronounced "meh-lee-meh-low, is a French expression that means literally a “mix of this & that”. I find the name very interesting since their food was really a mix of many ingredients that compliments the taste or add a twist to it!

How often do you let other people's nonsense change your mood?

Do you let a bad driver, rude waiter, curt boss, or an insensitive employee ruin your day?

However, the mark of a successful person is how quickly one can get back their focus on what's important.

David J. Pollay explains his story in this way….

Sixteen years ago I learned this lesson. I learned it in the back of a New York City taxi cab.

Here's what happened……………

I hopped in a taxi, and we took off for Grand Central Station. We were driving in the right lane when, all of a sudden, a black car jumped out of a parking space right in front of us. My taxi driver slammed on his breaks, skidded, and missed the other car's back end by just inches!

The driver of the other car, the guy who almost caused a big accident, whipped his head around and he started yelling bad words at us. My taxi driver just smiled and waved at the guy - and I mean…he was friendly. So, I said, "Why did you just do that? This guy almost ruined your car and sent us to the hospital!"

And this is when my taxi driver told me what I now call, "The Law of the Garbage Truck."

"Many people are like Garbage Trucks.

They run around full of garbage, full of frustration, full of anger, and full of disappointment. As their garbage piles up, they need a place to dump it.

And if you let them, they'll dump it on you. When someone wants to dump on you, don't take it personally. You just smile, wave, wish them well, and move on. You'll be happy you did.

"I started thinking, how often do I let Garbage Trucks run right over me? And how often do I take their garbage and spread it to other people: at work, at home, on the streets? It was that day I said, "I'm not going to do it anymore."

Life's too short to wake up in the morning with regrets.

Love the people who treat you right. Forget about the ones who don't.

Believe that everything happens for a reason. Never let the Garbage Truck run over you…

Shit!

As received by email ;-)
Cheers!

A stranger was seated next to a little girl on the airplane when the stranger turned to her and said, 'Let's talk. I’ve heard that flights go quicker if you strike up a conversation with your fellow passenger.'

The little girl, who had just opened her book, closed it slowly and said to the stranger, 'What would you like to talk about?'

'Oh, I don't know,' said the stranger. 'How about nuclear power?' and he smiles.

'OK,' she said. 'That could be an interesting topic. But let me ask you a question first. A horse, a cow, and a deer all eat the same stuff - grass - . Yet a deer excretes little pellets, while a cow turns out a flat patty, and a horse produces clumps of dried grass. Why do you suppose that is?'

The stranger, visibly surprised by the little girl’s intelligence, thinks about it and says, 'Hmmm, I have no idea.'

To which the little girl replies, 'Do you really feel qualified to discuss nuclear power when you don't know shit?

Random... AGAIN!

OK! I have not been sleeping well for what! hmmm three nights in a row! By not well I mean I go to bed at around 10:30 and I stay awake till after the prayers.. or even till after 5:00AM! Then my alarm goes off at 6:00AM. I was dead tired that I could not go to work yesterday! My attention span is so tiny these days, I dose off while someone is talking to me, and I cant seem to be able to concentrate or do things effectively! I have the worst headache I have been asking the driver to take me to work in the past few days because I am too tired to drive! I dont want to see a doctor because (a) I dont like them - no offense- (b) I dont want them to give me sleeping pills! (c) I actually dont know what kind of doctor should I see! ER? General? Family?

**********

Was today really necessary! The weather is yucky! The streets were over packed in the morning! There are people talking to me and I see their lips move and hear some noises!

**********

I went to Starbucks on my break... I forgot my bottle of water there, UNOPENED! I called them and asked them for it, they said yes and that I can come and pick it up! This is bad!!!! I left my order! Ohhhh, and the person I talked to on the phone was that same Barista I always write about LOL! He added to my stress actually with his nonsense questions!!!!

"You left your water here or there?" - I am like where is HERE and where is THERE to him!

"Was it open? what time you came? and with who?" - is he interrogating me!?

"You want it?" - Well... why did I call to begin with? No I just called to tell you that I forgot my bottle of water and you can throw it away!!!

Way To Go FCC

With the new traffic law banning the use of cellular phones while driving I find it hard sometimes to reach our driver! Apparently he did not get a headset (according to MOI, a fine will be charged for those who violate this order unless using a hands-free or headset). So I told him, the driver, that I will be getting him a headset.

A lot of stores have raised their headset prices like there is no tomorrow! Its insane! Some of which have doubled their prices! Other stores are completely out of headsets. I decided to head to a NOKIA - FCC branch which is so close to where I work (Remember my FCC gift? I decided why not check their branch!)

To my surprise, the headset suitable for the driver's phone was for ONLY KD 5.000!!! (other places were selling it for KD 10.000!!!!!!!!!)

I really am happy with FCC! First they did some sort of cooperation with the MOI going around colleges giving lectures on car accidents and alternatives available to use your phone while driving. Second the FCC press conference held for that same purpose where they clearly stated that they did not increase their prices and also promoted their products available to use -that are in compliance with the new traffic law-, and best of all when they started to hand in free headsets to random drivers on the roads on May 1st!

WAY TO GO FCC :-)

Memoirs of a Khunfisana - Episode 3

Any resemblance to existing persons in our story is purely coincidental.

Submitted by Tooomz

Zlaikhah's eyes welled up again as she thought of Fluffy....

Fluffy had been her hand servant for years, dressing up her antennas daily and waxing her exoskeleton to a shiny sheen to the envy of khunfisanas society.

Fluffy's friendship with Mildred was disturbing Zlaikhah ever since it started affecting the quality of her work. The only reason her mandible was flawless was because she kept repeating instructions to Fluffy. These days Zlaikhah's exoskeleton wasn't shining as brightly as it did of days past. Not only did she feel neglected from Isaak's inattention, but Fluffy's notable lack of concern over her work made Zlaikhah feel truly invisible to the world.

"Mmimmi, I feel that you're my only friend. Nobody pays attention to me anymore. What charms does Abdallah have that I don't? Why is Mildred distracting Fluffy away from me? Have I become as insignificant and undesired as last season's handbag?"

Sushi - EDO

Barista

Its been a while since I last mentioned anything about the barista dude (if you need to refresh your memory, click here, here, and here.)

I was in a course week so I was around much in the office, but yesterday when I went to get my coffee with a co-worker he passed next to us, looked at me, and I felt he hesitated to say "hello!" so he did not.. but then after a min he passed next to us and without even looking or making eye contact he said "Hi!" as he was walking... LOL! I thought it was hilarious, my co-worker did not get why I thought it was THAT funny!

He just came to our floor delivering coffee, but decided not say anything to me.. instead he smiled!

Off the topic, every time I get a flashback of last night's dinner I get hungry! Even though its not 9:00AM yet, I still crave sushi LOL!

Dinner!

Intlxpatr.... just so you get an idea, our dinner tonight at our so called "Purple Lounge" (AKA our female diwaniya) was that! YUMMM!

Diwaniya!

This post is dedicated to Intlxpatr. Enjoy!
********************************
Intlxpatr was wondering... In Qatar, gatherings are called "Majlis" and in Kuwait its called "Diwaniya"... How does majlis differ from diwaniya?

I would say Majlis literal meaning is a place to sit, and there are Male-Oriented Majlis as well as Female-Orinted Majlis...

Well.... A diwaniya can be seen as a cultural thing that started long time ago and the culture of it remained and in some way changed to some kind of social gathering where families, friends, and outsiders -in some cases- establish socio-political ties. It expanded in some cases, and diwaniyas became listed on newspapers, and the internet making it a "public gathering place" for the citizens of Kuwait.. like an open door to meet and talk about politics, business, life, family..... sometimes playing cards too! A lot of modernized ones are opened for Westerners as well, which I think its an amazing way to share a mixture of views and learn about one another!

Younger generation Diwaniya's are also a place of get-together where friends and family come and chat, play electronic games -or games in general- and watch movies.

Basically, the word Diwaniya refers to MEN reception area attached to the main house with its own services (such as toilets, serving area, buffet, and servants.)... there they discuss various subjects like life, business, politics...etc!

The literal meaning of it in English is "place of assembly". The word itself comes from "Diwan" which means an office! In the old times a diwan was the Amir's office where he made time to meet his people and listen to their problems, discuss them, and try to solve them!

Its interesting to see the transformation...
Tents into extension in a house.. or even a huge diwan byitself (even if it depict an old time Kuwaiti house - to retain the flavor)
The cushions you talked about, the sadu ones into luxurious sofas or seating areas

Traditionally... as mentioned above, Diwaniyas were meant for stags! Nowadays.. female presence is accepted in some of which! Which I still DO NOT get! Call me back dated or old fashioned, but there are areas I think that should be left as is. Diwaniyas for MEN and Chay Al Thaha (Late morning tea gatherings) for WOMEN! hehehe

As for me, we have a small reception area right below my Dad's diwaniya.. some of our friends refer to it is Girls Diwaniya! Where I would rather call it the "Purple Lounge" where we get together with our friends on a weekly basis (in addition to some more gatherings here and there).. socialize and have fun watching a movie or just simply talk and do girl's stuff!

Above are some pics of our place - My sisters and I-

Ansam = Male or Female?

This is a question to you all... specially the non-Arabic speakers;

Ansam... sounds masculine or feminine to you?

Apparently they thought I was a male and corrected it when they saw me... hehehe The lady kept telling me how sorry she is, I was not upset but kept wondering about it, specially when this happened twice in May so far.. There is this nice lady who works in HR and only contacted me by email, so I pick up the phone to call her because I wanted to ask her a question and she was shocked to her a female voice! LOL

Tell me?

I just want to write one post minimum during MAY!

I really dont have much to say but I am taking a course and when I am done I go back to work...

Well, after we are done with the lecture we go eat all together in the hotel where the function is, and overall its a pretty cool group. There is one Kuwaiti (besides me) and he acts weird to the point where he avoids even talking to me. I really have NO problem with that! Like I care, but today when I got into the elevator, the course leader got in and we kept the "OPEN" button pressed for this Kuwaiti "gentleman" to get inside and he kept looking at us without moving that two other men were hesitating to enter till the course leader said.... anyone??

They got in but he decided to use the stairs! How weird is that! Whats his problem! So I decided to observe him during lunch and he do talk to others and interact but acts weird when I am around!!

I think its for the best he is creepy! LOL... others in the course are really nice cool people :-)

I come to work and on my way to the elevators, this oldie stare at me... I was wearing sunglasses and was wondering what the hell! What is he looking at!

As for Barista dude... I did not see him today... YET! LOL

Barista Elevator Encouter

Remember my two previous posts about that Barista? (If not click here and here)

Well I will be in and out of the office all this week.. so today I came to work in the afternoon at around 1:30ish and that same Barista was with me in the elevator. He entered before me and clicked my floor before I even ask...

I said "Oh! Thanks"

He replied "You Welcome!" without looking at me!

LOL!!!!

Yeah.. uh huh! Sure!

This is one random post so here goes your warning!

1. I ate nonstop yesterday that I got sick -literally- last night and couldn't sleep well... I was throwing up at around 2:00AM!
hmmmmm lets see what I ate; ice cream, chips, lots of gum, water, seven up, shawerma, saj, fruit, kabab, salad, hummus, cake.... not at once of course! LOL

2. I went to the salon to get a hair treatment and relax! No! that last part did not happen!! I had to listen to some girls blabbering and it was annoying! They were loud and giggling most of the time = Headache!

3. I went to my grandma's house earlier this morning and she tried to feed me! I only had orange juice and that kinda made her upset, so when she insisted I drink Arabian coffee (which I usually like, but not with my upset stomach) mom pretended that she poured it in, when she actually dropped a drop of coffee - THANKS MOM!

4. I need to travel!

5. I won AGAIN! Wicked Bites contests on Facebook... I usually dont win stuff, but I won with them twice! First time cupcakes, and this time cookies... I want to win again because I already answered their third question!

6. I am going out for dinner that I dont want to cancel because; I love the place we are going to eat at, and I will get together with my friends whom I have not seen in quiet some time! YAY!

ohhhh and that up there is a dead squid we found yesterday while walking on the beach!
