"Gather Ye Rosebuds While Ye May" is a poem by Robert Herrick. This poem portrays our existence on earth, and that people age as life goes on, and everything becomes boundless. Herrick here urges people to take advantage of youth and energy while they may! The poem is in the genre of carpe diem, to seize the day.

Way To Go FCC

With the new traffic law banning the use of cellular phones while driving I find it hard sometimes to reach our driver! Apparently he did not get a headset (according to MOI, a fine will be charged for those who violate this order unless using a hands-free or headset). So I told him, the driver, that I will be getting him a headset.

A lot of stores have raised their headset prices like there is no tomorrow! Its insane! Some of which have doubled their prices! Other stores are completely out of headsets. I decided to head to a NOKIA - FCC branch which is so close to where I work (Remember my FCC gift? I decided why not check their branch!)

To my surprise, the headset suitable for the driver's phone was for ONLY KD 5.000!!! (other places were selling it for KD 10.000!!!!!!!!!)

I really am happy with FCC! First they did some sort of cooperation with the MOI going around colleges giving lectures on car accidents and alternatives available to use your phone while driving. Second the FCC press conference held for that same purpose where they clearly stated that they did not increase their prices and also promoted their products available to use -that are in compliance with the new traffic law-, and best of all when they started to hand in free headsets to random drivers on the roads on May 1st!

WAY TO GO FCC :-)

Israel

Do you know the literal meaning of Israel?

It is a common mistakes that Muslims and Arabs curse at Israel, which is clearly wrong if you read the following....

Etymology
*********
Over the past three thousand years, the name "Israel" has meant in common and religious usage both the Land of Israel and the entire Jewish nation. The name originated from a verse in the Bible (Genesis, 32:28) where Jacob is renamed Israel after successfully wrestling with an angel of God. Commentators differ on the meaning of the name. Some say the name comes from the verb śarar ("to rule, be strong, have authority over"), thereby making the name mean "God rules" or "God judges". Other possible meanings include "the prince of God" (from the King James Version) or "El fights/struggles". Regardless of the precise meaning of the name, the biblical nation fathered by Jacob thus became the "Children of Israel" or the "Israelites".

The first historical mention of the word "Israel" is in the Merneptah Stele of ancient Egypt (dated the late 13th century BCE), although scholars disagree on whether it refers to a people or a homeland. The modern country was named Medinat Yisrael, or the State of Israel, after other proposed names, including Eretz Israel ("the Land of Israel"), Zion, and Judea, were rejected. In the early weeks of independence, the government chose the term "Israeli" to denote a citizen of Israel, with the formal announcement made by Minister of Foreign Affairs Moshe Sharett.

Pranic Healing

PRANIC HEALING is a highly developed and tested system of energy based healing techniques that utilizes “prana” to balance, harmonize and transform the body’s energy processes. “Prana” is a Sanskrit word that means “life-force”. This invisible bio-energy or vital energy keeps the body alive and maintains a state of good health. In acupuncture, the Chinese refer to this subtle energy as “Chi”. It is also called “Ruah” or the “Breath of Life” in the Old Testament. Pranic Healing is a simple yet powerful and effective no-touch energy healing. It is based on the fundamental principle that the body is a “self-repairing” living entity that possesses the innate alaility to heal itself.

What do you think?

Thursday, August 2, 2007

On this day, today, in 2001, and 1990

1990 - Iraq invaded Kuwait, seizing control of the oil-rich emirate; the Iraqis were later driven out in Operation Desert Storm.

The interesting part is that the Calendar of 1990 is exactly the same as the 2007 one.

You can reuse your calendar as follows:

Assume X to be the year of your old calendar. Now if X was....
1. A leap year, you can reuse it in X+28
2. A year after a leap year, you can reuse it in X+6, X+17, and X+28
3. Two years after a leap year, you can reuse it in X+11, X+17, and X+28
4. Three years after a leap year, you can reuse it in X+11, X+22, and X+28

1988 was a leap year, making 1990 falls into the third category and the rule to apply here is X+11, X+17, and X+28

So now X = 1990

1990 + 11 = 2001 and 1990 + 17 = 2007

And all, August 2, of 1990, 2001, and 2007, fall on a Thursday!

I know I know its a bit nerdish of me :-P but if you by any chance happen to have 1990 or 2001 calendar REUSE them... if not, save this years calendar for the year 2018 and save the environment from the extra waste:-P

To Tan or not to Tan?

Summer time tan!! And we are talking "Kuwait's Summer Time". Summer might be the season to go out in the sun and enjoy the outdoors, but we are talking Kuwait here and the trick is to have fun...... "safely".

A lot of people dream of getting this golden tan, so they rush to get sun tan lotions, creams, sprays….. etc. without even knowing the difference between SPF and UV!

The UV Index
Ultra Violet Index is a scientific term used to tell us how many UV rays reaches earth at different times throughout the day. Those rays are always present but not visible and consists of both; UVA and UVB. The UVB is a good source Vitamin D3.
When looking at the scale of the UV index know that the higher the number, the stronger the rays are and the more exposure you will get! When the index is at a high number you have to be careful for that it wont take very long to burn your skin... just keep in mind when tanning at this time; "how pretty is your red tan with the peel effect" ewe!

The SPF
The Sun Protection Factor is the number you see on the bottle. The higher the number, the higher the protection you get. How to decide which number you need is based on your skin and how fast you normally burn. If you tan easily under the sand without a burn, you can use 4 and above...

Sunblock Vs. Sunscreen
On one hand, sunscreens usually come in the form of a lotion or cream, and has an SPF rating. When applied it reacts with the sun creating an invisible barrier. It is better to apply it 20 minutes prior to sun exposure and swimming, and reapply when you come out of the water. There are some waterproof sunscreens that last longer than the regular ones.

On the other hand, a sundblock is thick and gooey, and has no SPF rating. It completely blocks the sun's UV rays. A lot of times you can spot it on people easily applied on their noses and lips. So when shopping for a sunblock then look for a bottle that has NO SPF rating on it.

Remember, sunscreen and sunblock do not block out Vitamin D, they only block the UV radiation. And too much tanning can increase the risks of skin cancer, wrinkles, sun spots, discolored skin, well..... just looking bad in general!

Enjoy the sun..... safely ;-)

Web networkers 'at risk of fraud'

LayDeeLay sent me an interesting email earlier today that could be of benefit to all of us :-)
Here you go....

*************

People who use internet networking sites are being warned that they could be at risk of identity theft.

Credit information group Equifax said members of sites such as MySpace, Bebo and Facebook may be putting too many details about themselves online.

It said fraudsters could use these details to steal someone's identity and apply for credit and benefits.

About 80,000 people in the UK were victims of identity theft last year, at a cost to the economy of £1.5bn.

Lexus Face

July 10th, 2007

All of us are familiar with the derogatory term “two-faced.” This refers to somebody who falsely presents themselves.

A new idiom may be about to enter the lexicon. That idiom is “Lexus Face.” According to The Wall Street Journal “Lexus Face” is “a peaceful Ogasawara-style closed mouth smile said to put customers at ease.”

Ogasawara refers to the Ogasawara Ryu Reihou institute in Japan. This institute is an etiquette school which teaches samurai etiquette which has been handed down since the 1300s.

In Japan, Toyota is sending all Lexus employees for samurai etiquette training under the belief that this will help sell more cars. Besides “Lexus Face”employees are learning how to stand idly with “fingers together and thumbs interlocked” as well as how many arm lengths to stand away from the customer.

Why the wedding ring worn on the fourth finger?

I bought a book few years back called "Ever Wonder Why?" by Douglas B. Smith

(You can buy the same book from Amazon)

It basically answers so many questions that starts with the word WHY!

Why is the color blue used for boys?

Why do chefs were tall hats?

Its one iteresting book, easy to read, and informative in a way that wont make you bored...

There was this one question about wearing the ring on that specific fourth finger.. Why!?

In the book it explains that the vien runs directly from your heart down your left arm, towards that fourth finger. Wearing the ring on that finger basically symbolizes the love coming straight from (and to) the heart.

But I have received this email earlier from LayDeeLay.. and I liked the answer to it MUCH better... here goes LayDeeLay's email message:

Why should the wedding ring be worn on the fourth finger?

There is a beautiful and convincing explanation given by the Chinese.....

Thumb represents your Parents

Second (Index) finger represents your Siblings

Middle finger represents your-Self

Fourth (Ring) finger represents your Life Partner

& the Last (Little) finger represents your children

Firstly, open your palms (face to face), bend the middle fingers and hold them together - back to back

Secondly, open and hold the remaining three fingers and the thumb - tip to tip (As shown in the figure above)

Now, try to separate your thumbs (representing the parents)..., they will open, because your parents are not destined to live with you lifelong, and have to leave you sooner or later.

Please join your thumbs as before and separate your Index fingers (representing siblings)... ., they will also open, because your brothers and sisters will have their own families and will have to lead their own separate lives.

Now join the Index fingers and separate your Little fingers (representing your children)... ., they will open too, because the children also will get married and settle down on their own some day.

Finally, join your Little fingers, and try to separate your Ring fingers (representing your spouse).

You will be surprised to see that you just CANNOT....., because Husband & Wife have to remain together all their lives - through thick and thin!!

Arabic Numbers

The numbers we all use (1, 2, 3, 4, etc.) are known as " Arabic" numbers to distinguish them from the " Roman Numerals" (I, II, III, IV, V, VI, etc). Actually the Arabs popularized these numbers but they were originally used by the early phonecian traders to count and keep track of their trading accounts.

Have you ever thought why ........ 1 means "one", and 2 means "two"? The roman numerals are easy to understand but what was the logic behind the Phonecian numbers?

It's all about angles !

It's the number of angles. If one writes the numbers down (see below) on a piece of paper in their older forms, one quickly sees why. I have marked the angles with "o"s.
No 1 has one angle.
No 2 has two angles.
No 3 has three angles.
etc.

and "O" has no angles

Microsoft Photo Editor 3.0 Picture

Interesting, isn't it?
An ancient Phonecian manuscript explains this and I thought it to be fascinating.
